Instructions and Resources for Event Supervisors
General Logistics
Thank you for volunteering for the 3rd Annual Northern Regional Tournament or the 22nd Annual Florida State Tournament hosted by Science Olympiad at the University of Florida! We greatly appreciate your help in running this tournament and your contribution to improving K-12 STEM education for middle and high school students in Florida!
Use the the key to the right to determine what category your event falls under and complete the steps for your particular event. Note that the events are not necessarily grouped under the categories that the National Science Olympiad follows, but rather by type of instruction needed for the Event Supervisor to adequately prepare for the event.
General Event Logistics
If students show up late to their time block and you have already started the test, you should allow them to compete if possible, however they shall not receive additional time.

Before Competition
- Watch all training videos that pertain to your event (links under Training).
- Read the rules for your event making note of the topics your test should cover. Additionally, read the FAQs and Rules Clarifications for your event (links under Preparation) making note of the changes in the rules.
- Read the test writing and formatting guideline documents that are posted under Training.
- Look at past tests from previous tournaments here to get an idea of the type and style of questions. Your questions do not need to be similar and you should keep in mind competitors also know about this resource and have likely taken all of these tests during their preparation. DO NOT COPY OR REUSE QUESTIONS.
- Create your test, answer sheet, image sheet, answer key.
- Submit your draft test here by the draft deadline for review.
- Review feedback and finalize your test.
- Submit finalized documents here by Dec. 9th for processing and printing.
- Submit a materials request form here.
At Competition
- Check in at Headquarters by the arrival time to eat breakfast and pick up your event packet containing all testing materials, your t-shirt, and gifts from our sponsors and the E-Board.
- Head to your event room and setup before the first time block begins.
- Administer tests and grade throughout the day. Utilize your event volunteers to help with grading to ensure it gets done in a timely fashion.
- After the last time block has finished, enter all scores into the Scoring System (SOSS) following the instructions included in your test packet.
- Clean up the room and head back to Headquarters to return your event packet and undergo score counseling.
After Competition
- You are free to leave! We thank you for your help with running our tournament and hope to see you again soon! If you are interested in attending the awards ceremony, more details can be found on the Day-Of page under Regional B/C!
Build Events
Before Competition
- Watch all training videos that pertain to your event (links under Training).
- Read the rules for your event making note of the topics your test should cover. Additionally, read the FAQs and Rules Clarifications for your event (links under Preparation) making note of the changes in the rules.
- Open the scoresheet and download the spreadsheet for your event (under Preparation) and read through them and understand how they work. Scoresheets will be provided for you in your event packet and you will be expected to bring a laptop with the spreadsheet downloaded to competition to use for scoring teams. Teams are evaluated using the scoresheet and the information from the scoresheet should be transferred to the spreadsheet to calculate scores.
- Submit a materials request form here.
At Competition
- Check in at Headquarters by the arrival time to eat breakfast and pick up your event packet containing all testing materials, your t-shirt, and gifts from our sponsors and the E-Board.
- Head to your event room and setup before the first time block or the impound period (if applicable) begins.
- Proctor your event with the help of your event volunteers. If you need additional help, call one of the Tournament Directors.
- After the last time block has finished, enter all scores into the Scoring System (SOSS) following the instructions included in your test packet.
- Email the spreadsheet (if applicable) to ufso.volunteers@floridascienceolympiad.org.
- Clean up the room and head back to Headquarters to return your event packet and undergo score counseling.
After Competition

DO NOT COPY OR REUSE DESIGNS/TOPICS.
- Create your test, answer sheet, image sheet, answer key. Some of these items may not be relevant to your event and some may be provided for in the rules (e.g experimental design rubric). Use the resources here to determine what is applicable to your event. If you need further instruction, feel free to email us.
